Thoughtful Changes To The Corentus Team Wheel

Over the past 20+ years, we’ve worked from a foundation of three complementary team frameworks. These frameworks provide a foundation for the majority of our work with teams including the basis for a wide range of practical tools we use every day with our clients. From time to time, we improve upon these frameworks in order to obtain the greatest impact on our clients. We are happy to share the latest version of our team frameworks with you. We invite you to check out our revised Corentus Team Frameworks Overview, which incorporates the updated Team Wheel as well as our other two team frameworks: the Team Life Cycle and Operating Modes. Feel free to share this document with your clients—and if you do, we’d love to hear how it goes!

The Corentus main team frameworks are:

  1. The Corentus Team Wheel™ | 2021 Upgrade
We’re excited to announce the recent completion of important upgrades to our Team Wheel.

As you may know, the Team Wheel outlines key factors contributing to a team’s effectiveness, cohesion, and performance. Our models of team effectiveness have evolved steadily over more than 20 years, with the Team Wheel first emerging in 2017. This recent upgrade integrates feedback and insights from ongoing team effectiveness research, from our client teams across a wide range of industries, and from practitioners worldwide who apply our frameworks in their own team development work.

The Team Wheel is now better aligned with the content of Corentus team methods and tools, as we’ve added some components (e.g., Inclusion & Integration, Agreements & Commitments) and deleted or modified others (e.g., Work Effectiveness transformed into Meeting Effectiveness plus Planning & Organizing).

  2. The Team Life Cycle
Six-stage model detailing how teams’ mindsets, relationships, and capabilities develop and change over time.

Teams, like individual human beings, develop and change over time. The Team Life Cycle synthesizes the group development research of Bruce Tuckman, Susan Wheelan, and others into a comprehensive six-stage model. Life Cycle stage influences a team’s ability to effectively utilize each of the Operating Modes and helps determine which areas of the Team Wheel they are ready and able to focus on. We help leaders and teams develop awareness of the mindsets, capabilities, and challenges characteristic of each of the six stages, with dynamic applications to their own teams.

  3. The Team Operating Modes™
Exploration of five different ways in which leadership and accountability can be distributed within a team.

Groups of people within an organization can function together in a variety of different ways, only some of which involve real interactive teamwork. We assist leaders and teams recognize five basic operating modes—on a spectrum from minimally collaborative (directed by one authoritative leader) to fully collaborative (self-directed)—together with the benefits and challenges of each. A team’s primary operating mode(s) will affect the way it handles each area of the Team Wheel.
